Keep Your Greenery Up
You can leave those garlands right where they are. Fir garlands or cedar wreaths needn’t be confined to the four-ish weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the same way that fresh flower arrangements aren’t only for spring. Simply remove the red or plaid ribbon and swap it for dried oranges or pine cones for a wintry, holiday-less touch. If your greenery is looking tired, just grab a few sprigs from the backyard for a refresh.
Layer Your Lighting
Missing that warm Christmas tree glow? Keep the good vibes going with warm-toned lights from all your lamps and layers of candles—more than you think you would need. The advice here is to avoid turning on the dreaded big, overhead lights by ensuring that every room has at least two lamps. If you’ve been debating whether to add another lamp, the answer is almost always yes, and especially during winter. And if you have a fireplace, keep that firewood stocked!
Pile on Seasonal Textiles
Good news for plaid lovers: keep your plaid blankets, just switch up the color palette to help it feel a little less Christmasy. You can shift your decor into winter mode by trading out deep reds and greens for softer, more seasonal tones like icy blues or soft, sage greens. Touches of cream, which contrast so nicely with the stark white snow just outside the door, go a long way in adding visual warmth to a space. Layer in chunky knits or faux furs for maximum coziness.
Stick to Silver Tones
Silver feels especially festive during the holidays, but should be on display throughout the year. If you have bowls filled with holiday ornaments, just remove the colorful pieces and leave the more neutral. Silver and white feels shimmery and wintery. You can also fill them with pine cones or oranges. If you have silver mercury glass trees or compotes lining your mantel, simply remove any red and green ornaments and leave the sparkly silver as a nod to the wintery scene outside.
